Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system may suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
